Left-wing Rep. Alexandria Ocasio-Cortez demanded harsh treatment for a number of GOP lawmakers who reportedly sought pardons for the Jan. 6 riot from then-President Donald Trump.
In testimony provided to the House Select Committee investigating the riot, Reps. Mo Brooks (R-AL), Andy Biggs (R-AZ), Matt Gaetz (R-FL), Louie Gohmert (R-TX) and Scott Perry (R-PA) were all named as having asked Trump for pardons.
In an interview with late-night host Steven Colbert, the Bronx, N.Y. native said those members should be “expelled” from Congress.
Ocasio-Cortez argued that those members of Congress “were willing to commit crimes in order to illegally seize power.” She added they needed “to be prosecuted to the fullest extent of the law.”
“I will say, bare minimum, those who specifically thought pardons for themselves should be expelled from the United States House of Representatives … beyond a shadow of a doubt,” Ocasio-Cortez told host Colbert.
“Because if you are a duly elected official and in seeking a pardon, as you mentioned, you are consciously committing — you are admitting to committing a crime,” she continued.
“What that means is that they were willing to commit crimes in order to illegally seize power, and no person of any power, and of any seat, of any party, should be willing to do that in order to undermine our democracy. But that’s just the bare minimum,” she said.
“I do believe that many of these individuals need to be prosecuted to the fullest extent of the law in order to establish and to prove to ourselves and to the world that there is rule of law in the United States of America,” Ocasio-Cortez added.
In an interview Sunday on NBC’s Meet The Press, anchor Chuck Todd set the New York Democrat up by asking if she believes the House Judiciary Committee “should begin the process of an investigation” into Justices Clarence Thomas, Brett Kavanaugh, and Amy Coney Barrett for allegedly lying under oath during their confirmation hearings.
“If we allow supreme court nominees to lie under or under oath and secure lifetime appointments to the highest court of the land and then issue, without basis, if you read these opinions, issue without basis, rulings that deeply undermine the human and civil rights of the majority of Americans we must see that through,” ‘AOC’ claimed.
“There must be consequences for such a deeply stabilizing action and hostile takeover of our democratic institutions. To allow that to stand is to allow it to happen,” she said.
“And what makes it particularly dangerous is that it sends a blaring signal to all future nominees that they can now lie to duly elected members of the United States Senate in order to secure Supreme Court confirmations,” she added.
Chuck Todd continued to tee up Ocasio-Cortez: “Do you think lying at a confirmation hearing is an impeachable offense?”
“I believe so. I believe lying under oath is an impeachable offense,” the self-described democratic socialist continued.
Former Fox News host Megyn Kelly scorched ‘AOC’ over her remarks about the justices.
Kelly was interviewed on Newmax TV by host Eric Bolling, who observed that Elizabeth Warren (D-Mass.) is “coming at the judges pretty darn hard.”
Kelly responded: “Well I’ll distinguish between the two because I think AOC is a moron. I think Elizabeth Warren is smart — she’s ideological and not necessarily aligned with you or with myself — but I think AOC is not that smart, and she really just wants to be a star.”
“She’s sort of a Kardashian in Congress. I guarantee you she hasn’t read the decision, and I guarantee you she has no understanding of what substantive due process is, or the history of any of what she’s talking about,” Kelly continued.
