(USA Features) Two legalized immigrants who own a Mexican-themed restaurant in Phoenix say business is beginning to pick up again after they were hit with bad reviews online and threats for attending a rally for President Donald Trump.
Jorge and Betty Rivas, who are both U.S. nationalized citizens and owners of Sammy’s Mexican Grill in Catalina, Arizona, began receiving a backlash when a picture of the couple seated behind the president began circulating online.
“There have been calls as well threatening us and giving us a hard time because we support the president,” Jorge Rivas told Fox News‘ “Fox & Friends” morning program Sunday.
The couple said in addition to the bad restaurant reviews, they also received threats and noted that some called them “evil racists.”
That said, they both noted that in recent days business has begun to pick up again.
“The first day, a couple of days, it goes down, but like yesterday, we had a very good day,” Jorge Rivas said. “People know that anyone as an American has a right to support whoever they want, they come out and support us in a way that has turned out to be pretty good, thankfully.”
Both remain unabashed in their support for the president, as noted in a posted to Facebook last week.
Both couple discussed the negative attacks on social media while wearing pro-Trump hats in a room decorated with pro-Trump signs and cutouts.
Likely after seeing the couple on TV, President Trump tweeted in support of the couple Sunday.
“The food is GREAT at Sammy’s Mexican Grill in Phoenix, Arizona. Congratulations to Betty & Jorge Rivas on doing such a wonderful job,” Trump . “I will try hard to stop by the next time I am in Phoenix. Support Sammy’s!”
