The Backtrack President: Now Biden Says Migrants Who Crossed Into U.S. Illegally During Trump Administration Deserve ‘Compensation’ After First Noting That Payout Reports Were ‘Garbage’

President Joe Biden angrily denounced his predecessor’s immigration policies on Saturday while backtracking on previous statements that his administration wasn’t going to pay $450,000 in compensation to migrants who crossed illegally into the U.S.

“You said last week that this report about migrant families at the border getting payments was ‘garbage,'” a reporter started to ask Biden on Saturday before being quickly cut off.

“No, I didn’t say that. Let’s get it straight. You said everybody coming across the border gets $450,000. … The number is what I was referring to,” Biden muttered.

“Now, here’s the thing. … If in fact, because of the outrageous behavior of the last administration, you were coming across the border, whether it was legal or illegal, and you lost your child,” he said, drastically raising his voice, “you lost your child, it’s GONE, you deserve some kind of compensation, no matter what the circumstance.”

“What that will be, I have no idea. I have no idea,” he then added.

Biden’s answer comes following earlier reports that indicated his government is negotiating settlements with illegal migrant families.

“The U.S. Departments of Justice, Homeland Security, and Health and Human Services are considering payments that could amount to close to $1 million a family, though the final numbers could shift, the people familiar with the matter said,” The Wall Street Journal reported late last month.

“Most of the families that crossed the border illegally from Mexico to seek asylum in the U.S. included one parent and one child, the people said. Many families would likely get smaller payouts, depending on their circumstances, the people said,” according to the paper.

“In another instance, a Department of Homeland Security attorney involved in the settlement talks complained on a conference call that the payouts could amount to more than some families of 9/11 victims received, one person said,” the WSJ added.

After that report appeared, Biden suggested that it was false and that the massive payouts were “not going to happen.”

But White House Principal Deputy Press Secretary Karine Jean-Pierre later said that Biden was “perfectly comfortable” with handing out payouts to illegal aliens who were separated at the border from their families under the prior administration.

Florida Gov. Ron DeSantis blasted the administration for considering payouts to illegals while ordinary Americans are increasingly suffering under Biden administration policies which have led to historic inflation.

“I’m very, very concerned about reports” he has heard regarding the payouts, the governor noted.

“I mean, you think about it, Americans are getting more in their gas bills, they’re getting more in their grocery bills. You’ve had all kinds of really bad policies throughout our country, that has limited freedom. And you’re going to turn around for that, and you’re going to do $475,000 for an individual that came illegally to this country?” he said.

“I’ve seen a lot in my day. I’ve seen a lot that’s happened over the last nine or 10 months that I didn’t think I’d ever see, but this takes the cake,” DeSantis added.

“If that is done, that is going to be a slap in the face to every hard-working American who works hard and plays by the rules and it will especially being a slap in the face to people that have immigrated legally to this country.”
