(USA Features) One of the Republican Party’s most outspoken conservatives is calling for Congress to impeach President Joe Biden and his Department of Homeland Security secretary, Alejandro Mayorkas, over their handling of illegal immigration.
“I believe that Secretary Mayorkas and President Biden are refusing to faithfully execute the laws of the United States. We should impeach them,” Rep. Chip Roy, R-Texas, told Newsmax TV on Tuesday.
He went ahead and remarked on the recent crisis involving Haitian migrants, who streamed into his state by the thousands and settled in an encampment underneath a bridge near the city of Del Rio.
“Panama expects about 150,000 [migrants] by the end of the year to be coming through,” he said.
“The fact is, this is what happens when an administration puts a great big welcome sign on our border, saying that ‘if you come here, that you can claim asylum, and we’re just going to release you into the United States,'” Roy continued.
He went on to say that because of policies at the border, “we’re going to give lip service to enforcement.”
“We’re going to stop using Title 42 or the Return to Mexico program that President Trump was using. We’re going to stop using that, and we’re basically going to say ‘come on in,'” he continued.
Other Republicans have also called on Congress to impeach Biden for a variety of reasons.
Rep. Brian Mast said earlier this month that because no member of President Joe Biden’s Cabinet will support removing him via the 2th Amendment, that means impeachment has to be “something that should be considered.”
The Florida Republican made his comments on “Sunday Morning Futures” on Fox News, adding that the president committed “no less than 10,000 counts of reckless endangerment” against Americans in Afghanistan.
“No member of the Cabinet is going to push for the 25th Amendment so I would say that one is out,” Mast said, referring a the constitutional amendment that allows for the removal of a president deemed unfit to serve by a majority of his Cabinet.
“Impeachment is absolutely something that should be considered,” he said.
“We absolutely need to look at what is the truth about the phone call with [Afghanistan[ President [Ashraf] Ghani,” Mast added.
In late August, several lawmakers have written a letter to House Speaker Nancy Pelosi demanding that the California Democrat “immediately” begin impeachment proceedings against President Joe Biden after his administration stranded “hundreds” of Americans in Afghanistan.
“The American people must have full confidence in their Commander in Chief’s judgment and ability to protect our country and respond decisively to national security threats,” said the letter from Reps. Claudia Tenney, R-N.Y., Ronny Jackson, R-Texas, Jeff Van Drew, R-N.J., Pete Sessions, R-Texas, and Yvette Herrell, R-N.M.
