Jan. 6 Committee Dems Demand Phone Records from Trump Family, GOP Lawmakers

(USA Features) The Democrat-led Jan. 6 committee investigating the origins of the Capitol Building breach have issued subpoenas to telecom companies seeking phone records from members of former President Donald Trump’s family as well as Republican lawmakers who attended his “Stop the Steal” speech that day.

The Daily Mail notes that the request for phone records likely reveals who the committee plans to call to provide testimony under oath at some point.

“It’s not clear how the committee plans to ensure compliance from telecommunications companies with its request,” the outlet reports.

“The committee does have subpoena power but obtaining the records of members of Congress could set off contentious legal battles,” the Daily Mail continued.

The panel, whose only Republican members are anti-Trump critics Reps. Liz Cheney of Wyoming and Adam Kinzinger of Illinois, is seeking preserved phone records for Ivanka Trump Donald Trump Jr., Eric Trump, Lara Trump, and Don Jr.’s girlfriend and former Fox News host Kimberly Guilfoyle.

CNN adds that the committee has yet to make public the full list of names whose phone records are being sought.

“As of now, the list includes Republican Reps. Lauren Boebert of Colorado, Marjorie Taylor Greene of Georgia, Jim Jordan of Ohio, Andy Biggs of Arizona, Paul Gosar also of Arizona, Mo Brooks of Alabama, Madison Cawthorn of North Carolina, Matt Gaetz of Florida, Louie Gohmert of Texas, Jody Hice of Georgia and Scott Perry of Pennsylvania,” the Daily Mail reported.

Some Republicans on the list blew off the demand for phone records, with Brooks, who is running for the U.S. Senate next year with Trump’s blessing, calling the entire panel’s probe a “total waste of taxpayer money.”

“#Socialists & ‘Pelosi Republicans’ (Cheney & Kinzinger) seek my phone records?” Brooks noted on Twitter.

“Three results: 1 Total waste of taxpayer money. 2 Boredom for who looks at my records. 3 Russian Collusion Hoax 2.0. Why not subpoena Socialists who support BLM & ANTIFA?” he added.

On Friday, Banks sent Rep. Bennie Thompson, D-Miss., chairman of the panel, a letter warning against requesting his phone records.

“Rifling through the call logs of your colleagues would depart from more than 230 years of Congressional oversight,” the Indiana Republican wrote. “This type of authoritarian undertaking has no place in the House of Representatives and the information you seek has no conceivable legislative purpose.”

In addition to seeking phone records, the panel is also attempting to obtain the former president’s mental health records and any information pertaining to his alleged contemplation of using the U.S. military to remain in power.

Thompson has said he is interested in obtaining phone records for hundreds of people, though he has not revealed the bulk of them.

“We have quite an exhaustive list of people. I won’t tell you who they are, but it’s several hundred people that make up the list of people we are planning to contact,” he said last week.

The former president has said he will vigorously defend executive privilege to protect his documents and records.

“The Leftist ‘select committee’ has further exposed itself as a partisan sham and waste of taxpayer dollars with a request that’s timed to distract Americans from historic and global catastrophes brought on by the failures of Joe Biden and the Democrats,” Trump said last week in a statement.

“Unfortunately, this partisan exercise is being performed at the expense of long-standing legal principles of privilege,” he continued.

“Executive privilege will be defended, not just on behalf of my Administration and the Patriots who worked beside me, but on behalf of the Office of the President of the United States and the future of our Nation,” he added.
