Pompeo: Biden’s Afghanistan Mess Becoming ‘Debacle of Significant Proportions’

(USA Features) Former Secretary of State Mike Pompeo said Friday evening that President Joe Biden’s mess in Afghanistan is becoming a “debacle of significant proportions” but that the U.S. military had the capability to right the wrongs while there is still a chance to do so.

“We haven’t seen anything like this, the United States, in an awfully long time,” Pompeo, who served under President Donald Trump as the nation’s top diplomat and as head of the CIA, told Fox News host Sean Hannity.

“America has the tools to fix this,” Pompeo said.

“Our military could certainly figure out a way to go get these folks back and destroy some of these billions of dollars in equipment that we left behind, but it’s going to take American resolve and leadership, and President Biden has refused to show this for the entire time,” he added.

Pompeo, a West Point and Harvard Law School grad, made his comments after Biden addressed the nation to update Americans on what is happening in Afghanistan.

But the former top diplomat said Biden’s remarks simply made the situation worse.

“I didn’t hear a single thing from him today that would have given comfort to those families,” he said.

“There’s still no plan to get these Americans back. I didn’t hear a single thing that would give comfort to the very allies you spoke about,” he added.

On Friday, the president said the U.S. military was engaged in “one of the largest, most difficult airlifts in history,” and admitted he could not “promise what the final outcome will be.”

Biden also said he would not order more forces in to expand the current U.S. military perimeter beyond the international airport at Kabul so that American troops could fan out in the city and retrieve U.S. citizens trapped there.

Still, Biden added: “Let me be clear: any American who wants to come home, we will get you home.”

“We’ve made an agreement with the — with the Taliban. Thus far, they’ve allowed them to go through. It’s in their interest for them to go through,” Biden said.

“So, we know of no circumstance where American citizens are — carrying an American passport — are trying to get through to the airport,” Biden added.

Reports that Americans are being beaten by Taliban fighters and are being prevented from getting into the airport have been common.
