(USA Features) Former President Donald Trump made his strongest suggestion to date that he’ll run again for president in 2024, telling Fox Business Network host Maria Bartiromo that current “antiquated” campaign finance laws make giving a definitive answer right now impossible.
“The campaign finance laws, which are antiquated and stupid, they’re corrupt in a way, but they’re stupid, don’t allow me to tell you that, okay?” Trump told Bartiromo Wednesday morning after she asked him what his plans are.
“Everything has changed Mr. President,” Bartiromo, host of “Mornings With Maria,” told Trump during their phone interview.
“I don’t think you would be going around the country doing rallies, (if you are) not intending on throwing your hat in the ring again. Mr. President, are you going to run in 2024?” Bartiromo asked directly.
“If I tell you that a whole host of things happens which are bad,” said the former president.
“I can’t tell you. I can tell you this: I love our country. You are going to be very happy,” he added.
Trump made similar comments last month during an interview with syndicated conservative talker Michael Savage.
“I can’t really because of campaign finance rules, regulations, very complicated, very stiff, and frankly very antiquated if you want to know the truth. It’s ridiculous,” he told Savage when the host asked about his 2024 plans.
The regulations Trump is citing include disclosure requirements and strict spending rules, according to Breitbart News.
“Trump’s political action committee – Save America PAC – allows him to spend the hundreds of millions of dollars that he raised after the election for political activities but not on an official presidential campaign,” the outlet reported.
“If Trump officially announced a run for the White House, he would face strict rules requiring him to share details of his personal finances as well as stricter limits on donations and spending,” the news site added.
Also, Trump can continue to raise unlimited funds and use them to help Republican candidates win or remain in office as long as he himself is not a declared candidate.
The former president went on to discuss a range of topics with Bartiromo, including President Joe Biden’s Afghanistan bungle and other policies like the porous southwest border ahead of a speech in Alabama on Saturday in conjunction with the state Republican Party’s summer meeting.
“They see this man who is president destroying our country,” he said.. “We were energy independent six months ago. Today they are negotiating with OPEC.
“OPEC just told them no … I filled up the national oil reserve when oil was cheap. I filled them up for almost nothing … now they want to use oil that I just bought to bring down prices,” Trump added.
“My price was $1.87 per gallon. Now it’s going to be over $5.”
Trump also lambasted a familiar target, Senate Minority Leader Mitch McConnell, R-Ky.
“He reminds me very much of Biden,” said Trump. “He wanted it to be bipartisan. People don’t care if it’s bipartisan. They want good deals.
“He got 19 people, including himself to vote and to give them a victory” regarding the recently-passed and controversial infrastructure bill, which is now sitting idle in the House.
“They didn’t have a victory for a long time. They were dying at the border, dying in Afghanistan, they were dying all over the place, the Democrats. He wanted to give them a victory.”
As such, McConnell “should be ashamed of himself,” said Trump. “He is a stupid man … Mitch Mcconnell should be overthrown and overthrown fast.”
