(USA Features) A leading Republican lawmaker has filed articles of impeachment against Department of Homeland Security Secretary Alejandro Mayorkas after accusing him of endangering the country with extremely lax immigration policies.
Rep. Andy Biggs of Arizona accused Mayorkas of engaging in “reckless abandonment” of border security policies that were in place when he took over his post earlier this year.
“Certainly Joe Biden and Kamala Harris have a substantial amount of blame with this, they’re the ones who campaigned on this, but Mayorkas has not pushed back at all,” Biggs told Fox News.
“So he is the guy who is responsible for the border security and national security and it is a disaster down there,” Biggs said, adding, “He has failed utterly in his duty.”
The impeachment resolution contains two articles against the DHS secretary.
The first accused Mayorkas of having “engaged in a pattern of conduct that is incompatible with his duties as an Officer of the United States.”
“Secretary Mayorkas has failed to faithfully uphold his oath and has instead presided over a reckless abandonment of border security and immigration enforcement, at the expense of the Constitution and the security of the United States,” it adds.
The articles also accuse Mayorkas of failing to maintain “operational control” of the border as he is required by law to do.
They come as more than 1 million people have crossed illegally into the U.S. this year, according to various reports. The Biden administration has reportedly released hundreds of thousands into the U.S. to await their immigration or asylum hearing, with tens of thousands of those migrants having tested positive for the COVID-19 virus.
“Specifically, it points to the release of illegal immigrants into the U.S. that came with the rolling back of the Migrant Protection Protocols (MPP) – which kept migrants in Mexico for their hearings – and policies that release migrants and only require them in some cases to check in with Immigration and Customs Enforcement (ICE) offices,” Fox News reported.
The resolution goes on to say that Mayorkas has violated the Immigration and Nationality Act’s mandate that illegal immigrants who are not admissible be handled under an expedited removal process and put into removal proceedings.
“The Secretary of Homeland Security does not have the option of simply releasing those aliens into the interior of the United States,” the resolution says.
It also accuses Mayorkas’ DHS of having “released and transported hundreds of thousands of aliens into the interior of the United States without properly screening the aliens for COVID-19 to ensure that the aliens would not spread COVID-19.”
Along with the release of infected migrants into the U.S., that has “placed Department of Homeland Security personnel and the American people at risk,” the resolution notes.
“This is not because of his personality, not because of his partisanship,” Biggs told the network. “I don’t care about that. What this is about is he is enacting bad policy.”
For Mayorkas to be impeached takes a simple majority in the House, which isn’t likely given that Democrats control the chamber. It would take a two-thirds majority in the 50-50 Senate, which is also a long shot
However, for Biggs, the process is about putting more pressure on the Biden administration to get tougher with immigration enforcement.
We are stepping it up, that is absolutely certain,” Biggs said.
