(USA Features) Texas Gov. Greg Abbott said that taxpayers in his state will be paying less for new border wall that will soon be going up than they were paying for border wall erected by the federal government during former President Donald Trump’s administration.
Abbott’s comments come as authorities in his state have begun to arrest more people crossing over the border illegally.
“We’re not having to invent the wheel; we’re just having to apply the wheel that’s already been invented,” Abbott told Wednesday’s “Spicer & Co.” on Newsmax TV.
“And with the land that we already have available to us, it looks like it will be costing Texas a whole lot less than it did the Trump administration,” he added.
He went on to note that resuming wall construction is “happening faster” than he thought it would because contractors who were working on it before President Joe Biden canceled construction as one of his first official acts upon taking office are eager to get back at it.
“I’ve got to tell you, it’s advancing faster than I thought it would, and there’s an easy explanation for it,” Abbott told co-hosts Sean Spicer and Lyndsay Keith.
He added that some roadblocks currently include hiring workers and assigning a project manager via the public bidding process.
“But the reason why it’s happening faster is because we’ve already received a lot of information from companies and businesses that built the wall under the Trump administration or offered bids to do so,” Abbott said.
On Twitter, meanwhile, Abbott said state authorities are getting a handle on the masses of migrants entering illegally from Mexico.
“Texas has begun arresting illegal immigrants who are trespassing in Texas or vandalizing property & fences,” he wrote.
“They are now being sent to this jail rather than being released like the Biden Admin. has been doing,” he added in a post containing a photograph of the detention facility.
“We are adding more officers, National Guard & jails,” he said.
Abbott also told Spicer and Keith that he is continuing to deal with the fact that a majority of Texas state Democrats remain outside the state after fleeing last week to deny majority Republicans a legislative quorum in order to block a voter integrity bill.
“This is just a stunt by the Democrats, because when you think about what they’ve accomplished, actually they’ve accomplished nothing – other than maybe perhaps infecting others with COVID,” Abbott said.
“They’re achieving nothing while leaving behind in the state of Texas unfinished business, business that is more than just the election integrity bill that we’re trying to get passed,” the GOP governor continued.
