Poll Finds Two-Thirds of Blacks, Hispanics Disapprove of Anti-American Flag Stunts by Athletes

(USA Features) A new survey released this week found that some two-thirds of blacks and Hispanics disapprove of anti-American flag displays and stunts by athletes and others.

According to a survey released Monday by Insights & Issues, 61% of black respondents said they disapproved of the acts, while fully 69% of Hispanics disagreed with the stunts.

“While anti-flag protests are hyped by Democrats and the left-wing media as if they’re endorsed by many Americans — especially black Americans — the poll showed that is a false narrative,” Western Journal correspondent Samantha Chang noted Tuesday.

“A staggering 79 percent of adults surveyed said it’s important ‘for professional athletes to publicly respect the American flag on the international level,’ with 60 percent saying it is ‘very important,’ according to the I&I/TIPP poll,” she added.

The survey comes after U.S. hammer-throw competitor Gwen Berry, who finished third in a recent competition in Oregon to qualify for the U.S. Olympic Team, turned her back on the U.S. flag during a medal ceremony while the National Anthem played.

The stunt drew widespread condemnation from across the political spectrum and from former Olympic athletes and military veterans.

As for anti-flag displays by athletes, disapproval was widely bipartisan.

The survey found that 93% of Republicans and 72% of Democrats do not support such displays.

“Support for showing respect increases with education as well — going from 73% of those with a high-school education to 81% of those with some college, and 83% of college graduates,” Insights & Issues said.

The survey also comes as Cubans take to the streets in their own country in a rare public display of protests to push back on the Communist regime that has been in power there since Fidel Castro led a revolution in the late 1950s.

Some American politicians noted the difference between anti-flag protests in the U.S. and pro-freedom protests in Cuba, where many demonstrators have been seen waving Old Glory.

“Protesters in America: Burn the US Flag, a symbol of freedom, liberty, & justice—ideals that EVERY American possesses but so often ignore. Vs. Protestors in Cuba: Fly the American Flag & are willing to die for the freedom, liberty, & justice that’s synonymous with the USA,” wrote U.S. Rep. Byron Donalds, R-Fla., on Twitter.
