(USA Features) House Minority Leader Kevin McCarthy lashed out at Vice President Kamala Harris following her visit to El Paso, Texas, on Friday, suggesting she did not spend enough time along the border.
In comments to Fox News’s “Fox & Friends” morning show on Saturday, McCarthy, a California Republican, also said Harris was incorrect in blaming the Trump administration for the current chaotic situation along sections of the U.S.-Mexico border, which hundreds of thousands of migrants have inundated since she and President Joe Biden took office in January.
“Well, it seems like she spent more time at the airport than she spent at the border. But to literally say that they inherited a problem and they’ve made progress? None of those facts play out,” McCarthy said.

“You have a border that was secure. You had a new administration that changed executive orders and invited people to rush the border illegally. Now in May, we had 180,000 encounters,” he continued.
“That was a 21-year record of illegal crossings. For the last three months, it has increased,” the minority leader went on.
“The time that the president asked the vice president to take on this job, half a million illegal individuals came across this border when counted,” McCarthy added.
“Those are the people we were able to encounter. I think there’s going to be more than a million individuals that get through here that we don’t encounter from more than 160 countries.
“And what’s worse, Pete, you would understand this — we are catching people who are on the terrorist watch list from Yemen,” he said.
Earlier, Harris was mocked for going to El Paso rather than the Rio Grande Valley, which is nearly 1,000 miles to the southeast, at the tip of Texas, where illegal migrant crossings and drug smuggling are far worse.
“There’s a reason she’s going to El Paso, and she’s 1,000 miles away from the epicenter, which is the Rio Grande Valley (or) McAllen, where sector 19 has apprehended over 275,000 illegal aliens,” former acting Customs and Border Protection chief Mark Morgan said on Newsmax’s “Wake Up America” morning show Friday.
“They’re going to go to facilities that are permanent hardened facilities that that are going to be less crowded, really in some areas, state of the art facilities that they’re going to go to and again it’s going to present some for some really nice photo ops, but she’s not going to go to the heart of the crisis, and here’s it’s not just about what she’s not going to see,” he added.
