(USA Features) President Joe Biden warned Wednesday that his administration plans to go after gun dealers as violent crime rises in major cities.
“Merchants of death are breaking the law for profit,” Biden said during a press conference.
He added that his administration will have “zero tolerance” for rogue firearms dealers who are violating federal law.
Biden also said the government may help cities short on police officers hire more of them to help combat crime.
“My message to you is this,” Biden threatened to gun dealers who “willfully” break the law.
“We will find you and we’ll seek your license to sell guns. We’ll make sure you can’t sell death and mayhem on our streets.”
Republicans ripped the president for government overreach and tied crime spikes to attacks on police.
“I think a lot of it ties back to this whole ‘defund the police’ movement and some of the disruption we had in civil society last year,” said Nebraska Gov. Pete Ricketts, a Republican, told Fox News.
“And I think that’s part of, when you start undermining that basic foundation, you start breaking apart the bonds that hold us together and that’s why you see an increase in crime,” Ricketts added.
During his press conference, Biden intimated he has the experience to solve the problems.
“For folks at home, I’ve been at this for a long time, and there are things we know that work and reduce gun violence and violent crime, and things that we don’t know about,” he claimed.
Policies that work, Biden said, include background checks and a “ban on ‘assault weapons’ and ‘high capacity’ magazines.”
“No one needs to have a weapon that can fire over 30, 40, 50, even up to 100 rounds, unless you think the deer are wearing Kevlar vests or something,” Biden said.
