(USA Features) A growing number of Republican lawmakers are pressing FBI Director Christopher Wray for answers following an explosive report suggesting operatives working on behalf of the bureau helped foment the Jan. 6 riot at the U.S. Capitol Building.
“I am seeking your answers to clarify the following questions,” Rep. Matt Gaetz, R-Fla., wrote in a letter this week to Wray that contained three questions first asked by news aggregate and outlet Revolver News.
The questions Gaetz asked are:
— In the year leading up to 1/6 and during 1/6 itself, to what extent were the three primary militia groups (the Oath Keepers, the Proud Boys, and the Three Percenters) that the FBI, DOJ, Pentagon and network news have labeled most responsible for planning and executing a Capitol attack on 1/6 infiltrated by agencies of the federal government, or informants of said agencies?
— Exactly how many federal undercover agents or confidential informants were present at the Capitol or in the Capitol during the infamous “siege” and what roles did they play (merely passive informants or active instigators)?
— Finally, of all of the unindicted co-conspirators referenced in the charging documents of those indicted for crimes on 1/6, how many worked as a confidential informant or as an undercover operative for the federal government (FBI, Army Counterintelligence, etc.)?
The Florida Republican was reacting to the Revolver News report, picked up on earlier this week by Fox News host Tucker Carlson, questioning why the FBI arrested a dozen or so “conspirators” who allegedly planned the Capital attack but not 20 “unindicted co-conspirators” whose names have not been revealed in federal charging documents, some of whom, according to those documents, are said to have committed worse acts.
The report, and Carlson, speculated that the unindicated co-conspirators were undercover FBI operatives, which explains why they have not been arrested and jailed.
The report and the Fox News host, however, did not provide proof of their allegations.
After Gaetz sent his letter, which was dated Tuesday, he was joined by other Republicans who are also seeking answers.
In a Tuesday hearing, Rep. Paul Gosar of Arizona grilled Wray over the report and the shooting death of Air Force veteran and protester Ashli Babbitt, who was unarmed.
“No, I really can’t weigh in on the facts and circumstances of that case,” Wray responded. “As you may know, that was investigated by the D.C. Metro’s internal affairs department with the DOJ Civil Rights Division and the U.S. Attorney’s Office. And the FBI was not the investigative agency.”

Rep. Marjorie Taylor Greene also joined in on Twitter.
“We need names and answers about the FBI operatives, who were involved in organizing and carrying out the Jan 6th Capitol riot,” the Georgia Republican freshman lawmaker wrote.
“First they had a ‘back up plan’ to stop Trump in Russia Collusion witch hunt, now we are finding out they were deeply involved in Jan 6th. Deep State,” she added.
