(USA Features) Iowa Republican Rep. Ashley Hinson called on Congress this week to pass legislation banning Vice President Kamala Harris from traveling overseas until she visits the U.S.-Mexico border to see the chaos.
“This crisis is worsening by the day. Yet, the vice president has refused to go to the border herself and talk to the brave law enforcement officers, the men and women who are fighting this on the frontlines. This out-of-sight, out-of-mind approach is a disgrace,” Hinson said Monday on the House floor.
“She’s been to yarn shops, she’s been to bakeries, and she just flew right over the crisis at our southern border to meet with foreign countries with the taxpayer’s checkbook in hand,” the Iowa lawmaker said.
FLOOR ALERT: @HouseDemocrats just blocked @GReschenthaler's request to consider @RepAshleyHinson's bill that would force the @VP to see firsthand the border crisis she was tasked with addressing 82 DAYS ago, before, you know, going to Europe. cc: @RepChipRoy pic.twitter.com/hvnQSolfZj

“When asked why she hasn’t visited the border, she laughed. She laughed, and this is no laughing matter. The border crisis impacts the safety and security of every Iowan, of every American. Every state is a border state right now,” Hinton added.
Republicans have increasingly criticized Harris for her failure to go to the border though President Joe Biden placed her in charge of the crisis in March.
Harris recently returned from a trip to Guatemala and Mexico, where she said she discussed the “root causes” of mass illegal migration coming from those countries and others in the region.
House Rules Committee chair Jim McGovern (D-Mass.) dismissed Hinton’s call for legislation, calling it unserious and unworthy of discussion, according to reports.
But Republicans have blamed the Biden administration for reversing former President Donald Trump’s immigration policies and ending construction of a border fence that DHS agents say was effective in shutting down illegal crossings and drug smuggling.
“It’s unacceptable that after nearly two months as the Administration’s so-called point person on the border crisis, Vice President Kamala Harris still hasn’t visited the Southern Border and heard directly from the brave law enforcement officers about what they are facing on the ground,” Hinson said last month in a statement.
“As illegal immigration has surged, cartels are emboldened, and record levels of fentanyl are pouring into our country, this crisis continues to be out of sight and out of mind for this Administration,” she added ahead of introducing her legislation.
“This bill will stop Vice President Harris from traveling internationally on the taxpayers’ dime until she visits the Southern Border and reports to the American people on the steps the Administration is taking to address this crisis,” she added.
After Democrats blocked the legislation, Hinson appeared on Fox News to discuss why it is necessary.
“It comes down to holding the Biden administration accountable. You heard Vice President Harris laugh when she was asked about this. This is not a laughing matter,” she said.
“This is a safety and security issue for Iowa families and for American families, and so we’re simply looking to hold the administration accountable until they actually come up with a plan to fix the crisis at the border, which is a direct result of their policies,” she added.
“So my ‘See The Crisis Act,’ which was blocked last night on the floor would do exactly that. It would make sure that she can’t use taxpayer dollars to fly in Air Force 2 internationally until she actually goes and visits with the men and women at the border who are putting their lives on the line every day to keep this country safe,” the GOP congresswoman said.
