(USA Features) Former President Donald Trump said Sunday that it was “too early” to say if his vice president, Mike Pence, would be on the ticket with him if he decided to run again in 2024.
In an interview with Fox News at the North Carolina Republican Convention Saturday, Trump said he and Pence maintain a “very good relationship,” but that it’s premature to make any statements as to whether Pence would join him or even want to be vice president again.
“Mike and I have a good relationship, we continue to have a good—but it’s too early to be discussing running mates certainly,” Trump said.
“I was disappointed with Mike on one thing, as he understands and some other people understand, but overall I had a very good relationship with Mike, and he’s a very fine person and a fine man,” Trump added, a likely reference to Pence’s decision to count electoral ballots Jan. 6 from states where the results were disputed by some Republicans.
“I was disappointed on one account, but that was a choice that Mike made, and I want people to make their own decisions, and he did,” the former president said.
Last month during a separate interview with Fox News, Trump suggested he would consider running in 2024 with Florida Gov. Ron DeSantis as his VP nominee.
“I endorsed Ron, and after I endorsed him, he took off like a rocketship,” he said. “He’s done a great job as governor. I’m saying what I read and what you read, they love that ticket.
“Certainly, Ron would be considered. He’s a great guy,” Trump added.
In recent days, Pence has defended his decision to count the electoral ballots as his constitutional duty.
But he has also said he and Trump talk frequently and said he is proud of their record of accomplishment together.
