(USA Features) House Minority Leader Kevin McCarthy on Saturday called on Dr. Anthony Fauci to resign amid rising controversy surrounding his handling of the coronavirus.
Earlier this week, Buzzfeed News and the Washington Post published some 3,000 emails obtained via a FOIA request indicating that Fauci was informed very early in the pandemic it could have escaped from a lab in Wuhan, China, though he pushed the narrative that the disease occurred naturally and made the transition from an animal to humans.
He also was told that two medicines in common use that he never embraced showed promise in treating the virus, and that his agency funded coronavirus research at the same lab, the Wuhan Institute of Virology.
In an interview with Breitbart News on SiriusXM, McCarthy, a California Republican, suggested most Americans no long trust the nation’s leading immunologist and chief COVID-19 medical adviser to the Biden administration.
“I mean everything we’re finding there, how can the president— and I know the American people don’t have trust in Dr. Fauci,” McCarthy said. “Let’s find a person we can trust. Take politics aside. I mean we’re talking about American lives here.”
“We’re talking about an administration that shifted course when they first came in, the Biden administration, and gave millions of dollars back to the World Health Organization that lied to the world that is controlled by China,” McCarthy continued.
“We watched that they changed the direction when we were standing up to China to appease China now. This is the wrong direction, and I don’t believe anybody in America can trust that to get to the bottom of it,” he added.
McCarthy joins a number of other Republicans, including Sen. Marco Rubio of Florida, who are calling on President Joe Biden to fire Fauci or are calling on him to resign on his own.
On Friday, White House press secretary Jen Psaki brushed aside calls for Fauci to step down, saying that Biden is “very confident in Dr. Fauci.”
But McCarthy quipped that Fauci has flip-flopped often on many recommendations and statements regarding the virus.
“I need a chiropractor anytime he talks because he gives me whiplash from one position to the other,” he said.
“You’ve got to trust the individuals to look into this. Hundreds of thousands of Americans have died, and as he’s taken every certain position in it, how are you able to come back with the trust of the nation to get to the bottom of it?” the GOP leader said in his interview. “We have to know what went on and who knew what and when.”
