(USA Features) Former President Donald Trump ripped his predecessor, Joe Biden, on Tuesday, saying the U.S. border was under control and the country was energy independent when he left office.
In an interview with Newsmax TV, Trump said in the months since the border has lapsed into a crisis as hundreds of thousands of migrants have attempted to cross into the U.S. illegally, while Biden has canceled the Keystone XL pipeline and banned new leases for oil and gas drilling on federal lands, which he says will make the country dependent again on volatile energy sources.
“We had the strongest border we’ve ever had, and within a month, it became the weakest,” Trump told Steve Cortes in an exclusive interview on Tuesday’s “Cortes & Pellegrino.” “You have tens of thousands of people flowing into our country and many are criminals, frankly, released from jails in numerous countries.”
He added: “They’re going to destroy this country. And forget about the children, they have people coming in from prisons. They have rapists; they have murderers; they have drug dealers; they have human traffickers, and they’re trafficking women mostly, which nobody likes to say.”
The former president also said Americans have a tougher time traveling through airports and boarding flights than illegal immigrants do crossing into the country.
“You go to the airport, you have to show how you’re doing,” Trump said. “You come through the southern border and you just walk in. We had the strongest southern border ever, and it’s very sad to see.
“They have people – the worst people anywhere in this hemisphere, in this world – coming into this country, unchecked, being released in our country.”
He also blasted Biden for canceling the construction of the border wall.
A big factor is I built the wall, and what a difference it makes, day and night,” Trump said.
Pivoting to energy, Trump told co-host Steve Cortez Biden is making the country depending again on foreign sources.
“We’re putting windmills all over the place, which cost a fortune,” Trump said. “If you’re a believer in the carbon footprint and all of the other things when they make these windmills, which are all made in China and Germany, by the way … they ruin the environment. They kill the birds and they cost a fortune.”
Natural gas, on the other hand, “costs us nothing,” Trump said, and is so abundant in the U.S. the country was exporting it during his term.
“Somebody was giving me an analogy that natural gas is 1 cent per however they measure it. Wind is 50 and 55 cents. Solar is 56 cents,” Trump added. “So here we have it for 1 cent, but it’s probably almost nothing. Delivery is probably the biggest thing … It’s a natural byproduct.”
