(USA Features) Former President Donald Trump blasted the creation of a commission to examine the origins of the Jan. 6 riot, characterizing it as a “Democrat trap” while urging GOP House members to reject it out of hand.
“Republicans in the House and Senate should not approve the Democrat trap of the January 6 Commission,” Trump said Tuesday in a statement.

Democrats say the commission would function similarly to a panel established in the wake of the Sept. 11, 2001, terrorist attacks. That “9/11 Commission” targeted failures in intelligence and other shortcomings and made recommendations on how to avoid similar incidents in the future.
But Republican critics including Trump and House Minority Leader Kevin McCarthy, R-Calif., believe Democrats will use the Jan. 6 commission as a political tool to go after rivals, and the former president’s allies in particular.
“It is just more partisan unfairness and unless the murders, riots, and fire bombings in Portland, Minneapolis, Seattle, Chicago, and New York are also going to be studied, this discussion should be ended immediately,” Trump also said.
“Republicans must get much tougher and much smarter, and stop being used by the Radical Left. Hopefully, Mitch McConnell and Kevin McCarthy are listening!”
The measure is expected to pass in the Democrat-controlled House, especially because several rank-and-file Republicans are likely to vote for it.
However, it will have a much more difficult time passing in the evenly-divided Senate, though Minority Leader Mitch McConnell of Kentucky has taken a more ‘wait-and-see’ type of approach compared to McCarthy, who has rejected it out of hand.
