(USA Features) Sen. Lindsey Graham said during an interview Monday former President Donald Trump remains the most popular figure within the GOP and that critics who buck him will be “erased.”
“The most popular Republican in America is not Lindsey Graham, it’s not Liz Cheney, it’s Donald Trump,” the South Carolina Republican told Fox News host Sean Hannity.
“People on our side of the aisle believe that Trump policies worked, they’re disappointed that he lost. And to try and erase Donald Trump from the Republican Party is insane. And the people who try to erase him are going to wind up getting erased,” Graham added.
“It’s impossible for this party to move forward without President Trump being its leader because the people who are conservative have chosen him as their leader,” he continued. “He was the most consequential president for national security since Ronald Reagan … The people have chosen him, not the pundits.”
Graham’s comments came days before an expected vote on Wednesday to remove the party’s No. 3 Republican in House, Wyoming Rep. Liz Cheney, from her post as chairwoman of the House Republican Conference.
GOP leaders in the chamber including Minority Leader Kevin McCarthy of California and Minority Whip Steve Scalise of Louisiana have publicly supported her ouster as well as a replacement also endorsed by Trump, New York Rep. Elise Stefanik.
Cheney has reportedly pushed back on the party’s adoption of Trump’s ‘America First’ policies aimed at winning more working-class voters, which has caused consternation within her caucus and increased calls to replace her following criticism of Trump’s 2020 election claims and his rhetoric ahead of the Jan. 6 Capitol riot.
