(USA Features) Moderate Republican Gov. Larry Hogan of Maryland, who is said to be considering a 2024 presidential bid, claimed the GOP has turned into a “circular firing squad” over the party’s continued loyalty to former President Donald Trump.
“It bothers me you have to swear fealty to the dear leader or you get kicked out of the party. It just doesn’t make any sense,” he told “Meet the Press” on Sunday.
“It’s sort of a circular firing squad where we’re just attacking members of our own party instead of focusing on solving problems.”
Hogan has been a frequent critic of Trump within the GOP and is distinctly at odds with the party’s leaders, including South Carolina Sen. Lindsey Graham, who argued last week that the GOP “can’t grow without” the former president.
“I think we’ve got to get back to winning elections again, and we have to be able to have a Republican Party that appeals to a broader group of people. And we have to get back to having a bigger tent as [former President Ronald] Reagan talked about and not continuing to—look, we had the worst four years we’ve had, ever, in the Republican Party [under Trump],” Hogan said.
“Successful politics is about addition and multiplication, not subtraction and division,” he said.
That said, Trump managed to expand the party’s minority base, according to exit polling and post-2020 election survey data. In addition, supporters say his economic policies helped raise the standard of living for all demographics.
But even if Trump doesn’t run again in 2024, Republicans believe that his “America First” policies aimed at helping the working-class are what will propel the party to dominance again.
“I will never back down and I will never stop fighting for America First. There are tens of millions of Americans who agree. We are side by side. People over politicians. The hyenas in the media are terrified. So are the Democrats. And so are the weak politicos that float around whichever the wind blows,” firebrand freshman Rep. Marjorie Taylor Green said in a Twitter thread last month.
“I have plans to drive President Trump’s America First agenda with my Congressional colleagues but we won’t let the media or anyone else push the narrative. America First policies will save this country for all of us, our children, and ultimately the world.”
