(USA Features) New York GOP Rep. Elise Stefanik, who is being mentioned as Rep. Liz Cheney’s replacement as House Republican Conference chair says her colleagues should be working with former President Donald Trump.
“My vision is to run with support from the president and his coalition of voters, which was the highest number of votes ever won by a Republican nominee, in 2020,” Stefanik told Steve Bannon’s “War Room,” in reference to Trump.
“This is also about being one team,” she added. “And I’m committed to being a voice and sending a clear message that we are one team, and that means working with the president and working with all of our excellent Republican members of Congress.”
By contrast Cheney, from Wyoming, has sought to distance herself and the party from Trump, including his ‘America First’ agenda and the GOP’s emerging political strategy of going after working-class voters after they flocked to him in November.
Cheney has also ripped Trump over his questioning of the 2020 election results.
“The question before us now is whether we will join Trump’s crusade to delegitimize and undo the legal outcome of the 2020 election, with all the consequences that might have,” she wrote in the Washington Post on Wednesday.
Cheney has also called for stepped up investigations into those who took part in the Jan. 6 Capitol riot.
“Finally, we Republicans need to stand for genuinely conservative principles, and steer away from the dangerous and anti-democratic Trump cult of personality,” Cheney wrote. “In our hearts, we are devoted to the American miracle. We believe in the rule of law, in limited government, in a strong national defense, and in prosperity and opportunity brought by low taxes and fiscally conservative policies.”
Stefanik, though, supports the current ballot audit taking place in Arizona’s largest county, Maricopa, and she told Bannon that she stood with Trump when others were abandoning him.
Many more Republicans are lining up behind the New York Republican.
“If you look at somebody who can articulate a message, it’s Elise Stefanik. If you look at somebody who’s focused on winning seats and messaging against Democrats, it’s Elise Stefanik. And remember, she is a prolific fundraiser, she is a prolific recruiter,” Rep. Guy Reschenthaler, R-Pa., said during an appearance on Newsmax TV.
