(USA Features) If former President Donald Trump seeks his second term in 2024, it may not be with former Vice President Mike Pence at his side.
Rather, it could be GOP Gov. Ron DeSantis of Florida, Trump’s new home state.
“I endorsed Ron and after I endorsed him he took off like a rocketship,” Trump told Fox Business on Thursday. “He’s done a great job as governor. I’m saying what I read and what you read, they love that ticket. Certainly, Ron would be considered. He’s a great guy.”
If Trump does not decide to run, DeSantis has been named in GOP circles as a top Republican possibility for the nomination. He has received regular praise from rank-and-file Republicans for his handling of the COVID-19 pandemic in which he moved first to protect seniors and led the way in relaxing restrictions and mandates last September.
As he has before in recent days, Trump dismissed attempts to pin him down on whether he would run, saying that it is too early to make an announcement. He did say an early announcement “has a big impact on fundraising and many other things.”
“It’s a little bit of a crazy, complex thing,” Trump added. “The whole fundraising contribution stuff is ridiculous; the laws are so archaic and stupid, frankly.”
He went on to encourage Republicans to keep on fighting Democrats and the left-leaning Biden agenda while predicting that the party’s political fortunes would “turn around.”
“It’s going to happen,” he said. “We’re going to turn it around. They’ve gone too far. They can’t get away with this. We can’t allow them to get away with this. They’re destroying our country. Have courage. It’s going to happen. I’m with you.”
