(USA Features) Former President Donald Trump tore into NBA star LeBron James over a tweet the Los Angeles Lakers forward posted earlier this week that appeared threatening to a Columbus, Ohio police officer after he shot and killed a black knife-wielding 16-year-old who was preparing to stab another girl.
“LeBron James should focus on basketball rather than presiding over the destruction of the NBA, which has just recorded the lowest television RATINGS, by far, in the long and distinguished history of the League,” Trump said in a statement issued by his office.
“His RACIST rants are divisive, nasty, insulting, and demeaning. He may be a great basketball player, but he is doing nothing to bring our Country together!” Trump added.
On Wednesday, James tweeted, “YOU’RE Next” along with a picture of the officer, Nicolas Reardon, who is also a member of the Ohio Air National Guard and a marksman.
James later deleted the tweet.
Reardon shot and killed Ma’Khia Bryant shortly after he arrived on the scene of a disturbance. Video from a neighbor’s home, as well as from the officer’s body cam, show a confrontation and Bryant wielding a knife.
He fired his sidearm four times a split second before she plunged the knife into another young black female, the video shows.
