(USA Features) Florida GOP Gov. Ron DeSantis was spotted playing golf with former President Donald Trump at the latter’s international golf club in West Palm Beach, igniting speculation that DeSantis may seek the 2024 GOP nomination with the former president’s backing.
“Trump was pictured having conversations with DeSantis during their outing at the Trump International Golf Club in West Palm Beach,” the UK’s Daily Mail reported Monday.
“The photos of the two men together underlined De Santis’s closeness with Trump as the former president has remained mum on whether he’ll run in 2024 even as Republicans are jockeying for position to take his place atop the party should he decide against another bid,” the outlet added.
DeSantis has been one of Trump’s staunchest allies. The popular governor also has Trump-like qualities, in that he was one of the first governors to push back on COVID lockdowns and is combative with the media.
Most recently, DeSantis warred with CBS’ “60 Minutes” after he accused the program of selectively editing an exchange between him and a one of the newsmagazine’s correspondents, who accused him of a “pay-for-play” with regional grocery chain Publix over allegations he gave them a COVID vaccine contract because of a $100,000 donation.
However, DeSantis explained in the exchange that Publix was selected because the chain had stores more strategically located with the state’s most vulnerable populations.
State Democratic officials and elected leaders backed DeSantis and blasted 60 Minutes as biased.
