Biden, Dems try to pin economic fallout of coronavirus on Trump

(USA Features) Though the health of the U.S. economy was a strength for President Donald Trump’s 2020 reelection bid just a month ago, coronavirus-related business closures have led to growing unemployment and decreased GDP.

And Democrats now see that as a political opportunity for their presumptive presidential nominee, Joe Biden.

That said, according to the Washington Examiner, a majority of Americans still approve of the way the president has handled the pandemic. According to Real Clear Politics, 52 percent still approve of Trump’s handling of the economy as well.

“Trump created a fragile economy that was especially vulnerable to the coronavirus outbreak,” said Democratic National Committee spokesman Daniel Wessel. “And his mismanagement of the crisis has severely worsened the pandemic’s impact on our economy.”

Biden has also attacked President Trump’s handling of the coronavirus with respect to the economy.

“The administration’s failure to plan, to prepare, to honestly assess and communicate the threat to the nation led to catastrophic results,” said Biden in his plan to reopen the country from the virus.

“When Joe Biden sounded the alarm about this outbreak, Donald Trump was downplaying the threat we faced and disregarding warnings about the most severe public health crisis in generations,” said Biden spokesman Andrew Bates.

“Now we have more coronavirus cases than any other country, and we’re losing jobs at an historic rate,” added Bates.

“The American people have already paid too high a price in illness, death and economic loss.”

Still, supporters of the president say his administration only issued guidelines for social distancing and other countermeasures aimed at slowing the spread of the virus, and those were on the recommendation of his health advisers.

Governors and mayors are directly responsible for implementing orders closing businesses as “non-essential” and forbidding people from gathering in public, and most voters will realize that they argue.
