(USA Features) Former House Speaker Newt Gingrich says his president-day replacement, Nancy Pelosi, and Democrats are “blackmailing” Republicans over coronavirus funding in order to push their party’s political agenda.
“What you have now is a power struggle where Pelosi and Schumer believe they can blackmail the president into accepting really dumb ideas,” Gingrich said via satellite from Italy Monday during an appearance on “Fox & Friends.” “I personally do not want to see a Trump-McConnell-McCarthy team that are blackmailed by Pelosi and Schumer and give in.”
Democrats and Republicans have been locked in a political struggle over a coronavirus response funding package worth at least $1 trillion.
GOP leaders say that Democrats are packing in funding for unrelated items like provisions to bail out the U.S. Post Office, same-day voter registration, stricter fuel emission standards for airlines and other liberal policy objectives.
Rep. Dan Crenshaw (R-Texas) blasted Democrats in a tweetstorm Monday afternoon.
“I am not one to make hyperbolic statements,” Crenshaw wrote in one tweet. “But what Senate Democrats have done is truly awful. This bill was negotiated in good faith. Been monitoring its progress all week. It can save our economy. And they killed it. Out of spite and bitterness. Hold Dems accountable.”
“We will not forget this,” Crenshaw wrote in response to a tweet by Senate Minority Leader Chuck Schumer (D-NY) blaming the decision to block the bill on its supposed inadequate “protections.”
