U.S. officials say China has launched global disinformation campaign to shift blame for coronavirus

(USA Features) U.S. national security and government officials say that the Chinese government has launched a global effort to spread disinformation and shift blame for the coronavirus, which originated in China.

A number of former U.S. government officials, China experts, and national security consultants told The Epoch Times that the disinformation campaign is really aimed at repairing Beijing’s reputation ahead of its global aspiration.

The campaign is helping to shift anger away from the Communist government, which reportedly failed on several levels to contain the spread of COVID-19, and blame it on the United States.

What’s more, the news outlet reports, there are some people in the U.S. buying into the propaganda.

“Deception, disinformation, manipulation, distortion of the facts, obscuring their true intentions, and the patient steady erosion of the will to resist on the part of others is something that very much feeds into the global ambitions of the Chinese Communist Party to dominate the world,” Frank Gaffney, former Assistant Secretary of Defense for International Security Policy during the Reagan Administration, told The Epoch Times.

“It’s just one manifestation of it but it’s a particularly insidious one and it’s one that we ought to be alive to now,” Gaffney, who is the Executive Chairman of the Center for Security Policy, added. “Because in some ways, its the leading edge of the larger, longer term, and even more dangerous effort they [China] are mounting.”

The news site reports that Chinese government agents are planting conspiracy theories on American social media platforms like Twitter.

Some of the stories being pushed are that Beijing’s efforts were effective at giving the world time to prepare for the arrival of COVID-19, that the virus was introduced into China by the U.S. military, and that the origin of the virus isn’t really clear.

There have also been articles in Chinese state-run media threatening the United states directly, as seen in a March 17 editorial in Xinhua, which said, “The U.S. side should immediately correct its wrongful behaviours … before it is too late.”

Reports for weeks have noted that the virus outbreak began in Wuhan City, in central China.

Joseph Bosco, a former China Country Desk Officer in the Office of the Secretary of Defense, told The Epoch Times Beijing’s sprawling disinformation campaign is designed to “shift blame and escape responsibility for its gross negligence and lack of cooperation with international health organizations.”

“Communist China sees the U.S. as the main obstacle to its aggressive global ambitions,” he added. “It seeks to enhance the CCP’s credibility and legitimacy, and [to] delegitimize the U.S. and the West.”
