(USA Features) Former Vice President Joe Biden committed to naming a woman as his running mate during Sunday’s debate against Sen. Bernie Sanders as both continue to fight for the 2020 Democratic presidential nomination.
“If I’m elected president, my cabinet, my administration will look like the country,” Biden said. “I commit that I will, in fact, pick a woman to be my vice president.”
“There are a number of women who are qualified to be president tomorrow,” Biden added. “I would pick a woman to be my vice president.”
CNN moderators pressed the former VP on his claim.
“Just to be clear, you just committed here tonight that your running mate if you get the nomination, will be a woman?” CNN’s Dana Bash asked.
“Yes,” Biden said.
Sanders at one point said “in all likelihood” he would also pick a woman as a running mate.
Biden leads Sanders in delegates by a large amount as he continues to look like the prospective nominee.
The pledges to name a woman VP candidate come as reports circulated in recent weeks that 2016 Democratic nominee Hillary Clinton was angling to become Biden’s running mate.
The most recent speculation came from a former British lawmaker.
“Believe it or not, there is growing speculation that just when you thought it was safe to get back in the water, like the shark in ‘Jaws,’ Hillary Clinton is back,” George Galloway, who was a member of the British Parliament for nearly 30 years, noted last week.
“It is distinctly possible now, that Hillary will be on the Biden ticket as his Vice-Presidential nominee. Given his parlous mental-health, she believes that should he win she, like Lady MacBeth, will rise from being the power behind the throne, to sit on the throne herself,” Galloway added.
