(USA Features) HBO “Real Time” host Bill Maher said during his weekly program Friday night that he believes President Donald Trump will “declare martial law” over an outbreak of coronavirus.
“Now since Trump, I think, is not going to leave anyway, might as well run Bernie. He’s not. And by the way, when the virus gets bad, he’s going to declare martial law. Watch that,” Maher said, repeating an earlier claim that if Trump loses in November he would refuse to leave office.
“That could happen. That could totally happen,” he continued.
Thus far, there are fewer than 70 known cases of the virus — which originated in China — in the United States.
The president addressed the country Wednesday night and tried to calm jittery Americans, stating that his administration had the situation well in hand.
Officials in California and New York have said they have begun monitoring several thousand people for the virus, but there has been no widespread outbreak.
Still, Wall Street took a major financial hit on coronavirus panic last week, losing close to 13 percent of value — the most one-week loss since the Great Recession of 2008.
In terms of infection rates, the homegrown “flu” virus has afflicted some 28 million Americans this year, hospitalizing more than 260,000 and killing more than 14,000, according to the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention.
