Pelosi widely criticized for ripping up Trump’s State of the Union speech

House Speaker Nancy Pelosi has come under fire for physically ripping up President Donald Trump’s speech following his State of the Union Address Tuesday, an act that was caught on live television.

“As Speaker of the House for four State of the Unions by a President of the other party I am disgusted and insulted by the viciously partisan action of Nancy Pelosi tearing up the speech,” former House Speaker Newt Gingrich tweeted late Tuesday. “She isn’t clever or cute her childishness insults our American traditions – should be censured.”

Investigative journalist and Fox News contributor Sara A. Carter said she believes the act may cost Democrats politically in the November election.

“This wasn’t just ripping up President Trump’s speech, It wasn’t about President Trump, It was about all the people that were standing there representing the American people veterans, like my husband, who were there being honored by President Trump as well as others who are fighting opioid addiction,” she said during a post-address appearance on “The Ingraham Angle.”

“And I think the President did something that was so remarkable tonight, it was so powerful, he actually reached out and brought the American people on for the ride,” she continued.

“He said you are the reason for this great success, it’s you, the American people, that made this happen. This isn’t about me, I wouldn’t be here without you,” Carter noted.

“And what the Democrats did was actually stunning and disgraceful, and they’re gonna pay for it in 2020.”

Rep. Michael Waltz (R-FL), a Green Beret, tweeted about Pelosi’s gesture. “I find this sad. At the end of the day, we are all Americans.”

Added Senate Judiciary Committee chair Lindsey Graham in a video posted to Twitter, “I appreciate Nancy Pelosi as Speaker of the House, and I admire what she’s accomplished. But tearing up a speech isn’t going to tear up the accomplishments of this president.

“I think he’s well on his way to being reelected,” Graham continued.

Meanwhile, the White House tweeted out a short summary of the contents of the speech that Pelosi tore up.

Following the act and as she filed out of the chamber, a Fox News correspondent asked her why she did it, to which she responded, “Because it was the courteous thing to do considering the alternatives. I tore it up. I was trying to find one page with truth on it. I couldn’t.”
