Senate Majority Leader McConnell says ‘inconceivable’ chamber will have the votes to impeach Trump

It’s not very likely that the Republican-controlled Senate will muster enough votes to convict President Trump on any articles of impeachment voted on by the Democrat-controlled House and remove him from office, Senate Majority Leader Mitch McConnell said Tuesday.

“It’s inconceivable to me there would be 67 votes to remove the president from office,” McConnell told reporters.

The House is holding a new series of impeachment hearings this week, which began today with three witnesses who all claim the president improperly held military aid from Ukraine in exchange for a promise from that government to investigation 2016 election interference and Vice President Joe Biden’s activities in the country.

The aid went through, however, and the Ukrainian government has never publicly announced investigations.
