Why there isn’t an ‘E’ in our school letter grading system (in case you’ve ever wondered)

A, B, C, D, F.

That’s the grading system most commonly used in primary and secondary education.

But why? What happened to the “E” grade? Why skip and go to “F” as the worse grade you could get?
